چکیده

A very simple and eÆcient nite element method is introduced for two and three dimensional viscous incompressible ows using the vorticity formulation. The method relies on recasting traditional nite element method in the spirit of the high order accurate nite di erence methods introduced by the authors in [10]. Optimal accuracy of arbitrary order can be achieved using standard nite element or spectral elements. The method is convectively stable and is particularly suited for moderate to high Reynolds number ows.

A Fast Immersed Boundary Fourier Pseudo-spectral Method for Simulation of the Incompressible Flows

Abstract   The present paper is devoted to implementation of the immersed boundary technique into the Fourier pseudo-spectral solution of the vorticity-velocity formulation of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The immersed boundary conditions are implemented via direct modification of the convection and diffusion terms, and therefore, in contrast to some other similar ...

A non-conforming least-squares finite element method for incompressible fluid flow problems

In this paper, we develop least-squares finite element methods (LSFEMs) for incompressible fluid flows with improved mass conservation. Specifically, we formulate a new locally conservative LSFEM for the velocity– vorticity–pressure Stokes system, which uses a piecewise divergence-free basis for the velocity and standard C 0 elements for the vorticity and the pressure. The new method, which we ...

Pure vorticity formulation and Galerkin discretization for the Brinkman equations

We introduce a new finite element method for the approximation of the three-dimensional Brinkman problem formulated in terms of the velocity, vorticity, and pressure fields. The proposed strategy exhibits the advantage that, at the continuous level, a complete decoupling of vorticity and pressure can be established under the assumption of sufficient regularity. The velocity is then obtained as ...

Assessment of a vorticity based solver for the Navier-Stokes equations

We investigate numerically a recently proposed vorticity based formulation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The formulation couples a velocity-pressure system with a vorticity-helicity system, and is intended to provide a numerical scheme with enhanced accuracy and superior conservation properties. For a few benchmark problems, we study the performance of a finite element method f...

Incompressible Flow Computations Based on the Vorticity-stream Function and Velocity-pressure Formulations

Finite element procedures and computations based on the velocity-pressure and vorticitystream function formulations of incompressible flows are presented. Two new multi-step velocity-pressure formulations are proposed and are compared with the vorticity-stream function and one-step formulations. The example problems chosen are the standing vortex problem and flow past a circular cylinder. Bench...
